Tibetan Course in Dharma City - Manjushri
Many Buddhist scriptures in Sanskrit have been lost or destroyed, but a significant amount of these ancient texts came down to us in Tibetan. In Tibet itself, a stunning Buddhist and lay literature came to flourish. Hence learning classical Tibetan is a key to this corpus of extraordinary wisdom texts in their original version. Spoken Tibetan, in turn, opens the door to a unique tradition carried on by Tibetans.

This fall we offer the following course levels
:

- Beginner 3
Colloquial: To enter this level it is required to have understood and trained in the Colloquial Tibetan Text Book by Franziska Oertle up to lesson 8 (basic grammar prior & past-present-future conjugation). The course will take place every 2 weeks (see dates below).

Classical
: To enter this level it is required to have started studying classical grammar, including sentence order, verbs, connective, agentive, and la-dön particles. We plan to cover the following topics: source particle, relative clauses, and conjugation.

- Intermediate
3
Colloquial: To enter this level it is required to have understood and trained in the Colloquial Tibetan Text Book by Franziska Oertle up to and including lesson 17. We will start from lesson 18 and we plan to cover 4 lessons (this is more or less equivalent to the Manual of Standard Tibetan lessons).

Classical
: To enter this level it is required to have a good understanding of the fundaments of classical grammar. In addition, it is necessary to have already trained translating at least one scripture in each of the following genres of Buddhist literature: sūtra, commentary and liturgy in verse. This fall we will continue to translate the Ngöndro sadhana of the Longchen Nyingthik, with the support of a Tibetan commentary on the Ngöndro. This course will be open to both Intermediate 2 and Advanced 2 levels.

Pechas- Advanced
Colloquial: We have reached lesson 25 of the Colloquial Tibetan Text Book by Franziska Oertle. However there is no group colloquial class this semester. Motivated students can attend Intermediate 2 colloquial class, which will provide a good training opportunity – as colloquial skills should be drilled a lot.

Classical
: This fall there will be a class translation of the Ngöndro sadhana of the Longchen Nyingthik, with the support of a Tibetan commentary on the Ngöndro. This course will be open to both Intermediate 2 and Advanced 2 levels. Advanced students are also expected to work on an individual translation project. To support the progression of the project, each student will have 2 private meetings over the semester: one with Chloé Cramer to discuss translation issues and choices, and one with Lopön Jampa Norgyal to clarify difficult points connected to the meaning and other issues that only a trained scholar can solve.
