General Buddhist Studies Course 2013

Subject:
The Thirty-Seven Practices of the Bodhisattvas
Course guided by Dzogchen Ranyak Patrul Rinpoche
The General Buddhist Studies Course has been designed for those who wish to be guided through their study of Buddhism, but who do not wish to commit themselves to a programme of continual study and practice. It is open to all and will be be followed in future years by other teachings which will enrich students' understanding of diverse aspects of Buddhism. It is a rare and excellent opportunity to receive an introduction to the fundamentals of Buddhist philosophy, while meeting an authentic and qualified Buddhist lama.
As a topic for this year’s course Rinpoche choose “The Thirty-Seven Practices of the Bodhisattvas”, a classic text composed by the great Tibetan master Gyalse Ngulchu Togme (1295 - 1369). It beautifully portrays the central Mahayana thoughts of loving-kindness and compassion together with their cultivation through practice. Although the root text was composed some centuries ago, it remains highly relevant for modern scholars and practitioners due to its down-to-earth instructions and straightforward approach. Without much elaboration but with great literally beauty, it summarizes the quintessence of the Mahayana path in a way that has made it a precious treasure to spiritual practitioners throughout the centuries.
Normally this text is the object of self-studies for shedra students as well, so its investigation together under Rinpoche’s guidance will be useful for any type of participants, be they complete beginners or advanced shedra students.

Rinpoche will teach in English; there will be a translation into French.

The course will be followed by the Altruistic Activity Retreat, also taking place in Dharma City. More information can be found here.
